A 15.58 millimeter South Sea pearl, luminous and near-perfectly round, crowns a dome of 18 karat yellow gold. The pearl sits low and wide, cradled in a polished gold collar so nothing interrupts its surface — and the light it throws is that soft, silvery cream only a South Sea pearl gives.

What makes it a cocktail ring rather than simply a pearl ring is what surrounds it. Nine square-cut rubies form a tight ribbon of red on either side of the pearl, channel-set edge to edge, and beyond them fifty round brilliant diamonds — 2.00 carats in total — run in three graduated rows down the shoulders. Red, white, gold, and pearl, stacked in bands, each one framing the next.

It weighs 23.40 grams, so it has real presence on the hand: substantial, architectural, unmistakably a 1980s statement ring. Currently a size 4.5.
